Horizons Amsterdam places the dot beyond the horizon and demonstrates that people and nature can live in complete harmony. Energy positive

Horizons is an intelligent building where every aspect of the impact on nature has been considered. PV panels are part of the design and situated on canopies so that energy is maximally generated in the facades, without being visible at street level. The building is energy-generating with electric shared cars serving as batteries to store it. With a share of 133% of generated renewable energy (BENG3) and a primary fossil energy consumption of -23 kWh (BENG2), the building sets a new standard for the Dutch building industry.

CO2 negative

The wooden building stores more CO2 than is emitted during production, due to both the addition of biobased and recycled materials. New innovations ensure that Horizons is circular, making smart use of resources. For example, glass beads are added to the floor for extra mass, improving acoustics and maintaining the building's flexibility.

A closed resource cycle

Horizons stands for a healthy building in which resource cycles are closed. For example, a Biomakery™ forms the green heart of the building. This innovative installation biologically purifies residents' wastewater, which can then be used for washing machines, watering plants and flushing toilets. Vegetable waste is collected indoors in the EcoCreation™ and turned into fertile soil, which in turn is used in the courtyard garden and on the roof terraces as food for the plants. And granulated glass beads are used in the wood floor, for the benefit of mass, acoustics and flexibility. With all the measures, the building achieves an MPG 70% lower than the building code. Through the responsible use of materials, it contributes to nature instead of harming it.

 

For nature

Horizons breathes through its many different (rooftop) gardens. In addition, the indoor outdoor garden provides climate-adaptive development. With the planting against the facades and various green roofs, more than 30 insect-friendly plant species are added. The roof gardens can be used by all residents or even just for biodiversity. In Horizons, there is room for everyone in this ecosystem, both humans and animals.

 

For everyone

Together, people are happier, and in Horizons, residents are intentionally connected. At the heart of the building is an attractive botanical garden, a tree court with tiny forest and a communal living room. There is a strong commitment to social sustainability and designing a warm and welcoming building. Horizons' living room is an extension of everyone's home, and features shared amenities such as washing machines, library and tools in addition to workstations and places to relax. The various attractive green (rooftop) terraces, each with its own functionality, provide social connection among residents, where they can meet, garden, exercise, eat and relax.
