Onno Dwars, CEO of Ballast Nedam Development, plays a leading role as domain leader in the construction of a nature-inclusive society.
Green Mental Health Care Facilities and Local Building Materials
The domain leaders work daily to cleverly utilize nature in their sector, with promising experiences. Think of green mental health care facilities that use nature as a source for mental well-being. Or construction companies developing homes from natural building materials grown locally and contributing to the construction of wind farms that provide habitat for cod and flat oysters.
Working from nature also aids in solving major challenges in our living environment concerning climate, water, and food. A flourishing and robust nature sequesters CO2, optimally purifies water, and ensures a soil full of life on which we grow our food. And that is the basis for our health and existence. Rural areas play a key role. A combination of functions is possible there. Provinces assess each area to see how they can combine nature restoration, nitrogen reduction, and more climate-resilient living and working. The bundling of thinking and development power from the different sectors of the Nature-Inclusive Agenda provides new inspiration and possibilities for this.
Nine Domain Leaders
The new domain leaders promote the nature-inclusive society by combining their experience and expertise from various fields.
The domain leaders are:
• Onno Dwars - Construction (Ballast Nedam)
• Marjolein de Gorter-Manhoudt - Energy (TenneT)
• Alex Datema - Agriculture (BoerenNatuur)
• Lidwin van Velden - Financial sector (Nederlands Waterschapsbank)
• Renske Visscher - Health (Instituut voor Natuureducatie)
• Eveline Buter - Infrastructure (Witteveen+Bos)
• Noëlle Aarts - Education & Awareness (Radboud University)
• Geert Dijks - Leisure economy (HISWA-RECRON)
• Wim Dossaert - Water (Dunea)
Together with many representatives from governments, civil society, businesses, and organizations, they form the new Nature-Inclusive National Consultation (NiNO) under the leadership of Ambassador André van der Zande. He says: "Working in a nature-inclusive way requires a shift in our thinking. Fortunately, there are already frontrunners in all sectors setting a good example. It is now a matter of moving from a handful of parties to many. With nature as an ally, we can leave behind a pleasant and healthy society for generations to come. From the NiNO, we jointly commit ourselves to this."
Towards a Nature-Inclusive Agenda 2.0
A broad group from the Interprovincial Consultation (IPO) and provinces, Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten, LandschappenNL, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality presented the first Nature-Inclusive Agenda in June 2022, together with representatives from many societal parties. The work of the domain leaders is part of the implementation of the first agenda. This year, a second version of the Agenda will be developed, including an investment agenda.
