Marktkwartier West

Food Center

Tucked away between Jan van Galenstraat and Haarlemmerweg in Amsterdam lies the Food Center site. For decades, this has been the place in Amsterdam where shops and restaurants purchase vegetables, fruits, and other foodstuffs. Currently, you can mainly see high fences, warehouse roofs, and an access gate that you can't just pass through. The site is undergoing a transformation. Ballast Nedam Development, in collaboration with VolkerWessels Vastgoed, continues to work on this redevelopment after winning the tender for the project.

What is going to happen

The Food Center is being renovated and will move to the north side. The space that becomes available on the side of Jan van Galenstraat is intended for housing construction. In the new Food Center, companies will come together that collectively 'feed the bellies of Amsterdam'. The consortium of Ballast Nedam Development and VolkerWessels Vastgoed is currently in full discussion with the existing entrepreneurs (represented by the United Companies FCA) about the future plans. The companies will gradually shift towards the Haarlemmerweg side. This will create space for Marktkwartier West, the residential area that will be developed on the Food Center site.

Marktkwartier West

The Markthal

The monumental central market hall is being restored to its former glory and will once again be open to the public. For the renovation and redevelopment of the Market Hall, we are collaborating with BOEi, the National Foundation for the Restoration and Redevelopment of Cultural Heritage. BOEi, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to preserving industrial, agricultural, and religious heritage in the Netherlands.

In the city, there is much speculation about the future use of this unique building. Will Amsterdam have its own Market Hall? The consortium's plans include a (partially) public market hall with plenty of space for food and drink. But what exactly will it entail? And how long will it take? We'll have to be patient for a little while longer. As soon as the plans for redevelopment are finalized, we will announce it on our project website.
