Urban Developer Ballast Nedam Development acquires MRP's stake in Cartesius Utrecht
Effective July 1, 2026, Ballast Nedam Development will acquire MRP's 50% stake in Cartesius Utrecht. Through this transaction, Ballast Nedam Development will independently continue the further realization of this large-scale inner-city area development project. Inspired by the principles of the Blue Zones science, Cartesius Utrecht will, upon completion, comprise approximately 3,300 homes, combined with amenities centered around Cartesius Central Park and the distinctive historic CAB building.
Over the past several years, Ballast Nedam Development and MRP have worked together intensively and successfully on the development of Cartesius Utrecht and are proud of the results achieved. With the full acquisition, Ballast Nedam Development further strengthens its position as the area developer of one of the largest inner-city residential development projects in the Utrecht region.
Onno Dwars, CEO of Ballast Nedam Development:
"From the very beginning, Cartesius Utrecht has been an area development project to which we have dedicated our hearts and souls. We thank MRP for everything they have contributed and for the excellent collaboration. Our commitment to Cartesius and the city of Utrecht remains as strong as ever. It is a privilege to help shape the city and make a meaningful impact on this extraordinary location. The fact that this area development approach has gained recognition not only in Utrecht, but throughout the Netherlands and far beyond by organizations such as the World Economic Forum and the World Health Organization, fills us with both humility and pride."
Bart Meijer, CEO and founder of MRP:
"Cartesius Utrecht is in good hands with Ballast Nedam Development. This milestone not only marks the successful completion of an important phase, but also enables us to take the next step in MRP's development. Cartesius Utrecht has strengthened our organization across the board. The insights we gained in area development, collaboration, and placing healthy living environments at the center of our approach will also be carried forward into new projects. Looking back, we can confidently say that we have not only met expectations, but exceeded them. We are proud of the results achieved and look forward to continuing to advance this vision."
With this transfer, Ballast Nedam Development assumes all rights and obligations within the existing partnership structure. Existing agreements will remain fully in force and unchanged.
The development of Cartesius Utrecht is well underway. The first 700 homes are currently under construction and will be delivered this year. Construction of approximately 1,100 additional homes will begin shortly, while the remaining 1,500 homes are currently in development.
