Cartesius UtreCartesius Utrecht has a global premiere with the official launch of the first bidirectional Hyundai IONIQ 5cht heeft wereldwijde primeur met officiële lancering eerste bidirectionele Hyundai IONIQ 5

The first bidirectional Hyundai IONIQ 5 was launched at the CAB, the living room of Cartesius Utrecht, a green, sustainable, and healthy urban district. Cartesius Utrecht is part of the world's first region with a bidirectional ecosystem. In this system, electric shared cars function as batteries for large-scale storage of sustainable energy. The Cartesius Consortium, represented by CEO Ballast Nedam Development Onno Dwars and CEO MRP Bart Meijer, welcomed State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen, Mayor Sharon Dijksma, Director of Stations and Risk Management and member of the NS Board of Directors Anneke de Vries, CEO Hyundai Europe Michael Cole from Hyundai, and Director of We Drive Solar Robin Berg to the CAB for this festive launch.

Utrecht is a testing ground for local energy generation

The Hyundai headquarters in South Korea has chosen the historic location CAB as the ideal place to achieve the global first for the first V2G (bidirectional) Hyundai IONIQ 5. Where in 1948 the first stone was laid by the NS for the Central Auto Repair Company (CAB), now marks the first step towards an accelerated transition in energy with the (shared) mobility of the future.

The Utrecht region is creating a testbed - unique in the world - by linking local energy generation to the intelligent charging of electric cars. The Smart Solar Charging concept forms the basis for upgrading to large-scale implementation of a future energy market. This development offers cities and companies in the Netherlands and Europe the opportunity to take the lead internationally in the energy transition.

The upscaling of bidirectional charging makes the Netherlands an international frontrunner. It also aligns with the municipality of Utrecht's Mobility Plan 2040, which emphasizes "sustainable mobility and improved livability." There is also a direct contribution to climate goals. This collaboration will lead to a significant increase in electric shared cars, starting in Utrecht.

Cartesius - Electric driving with shared cars becomes the norm

In Cartesius, healthy and sustainable mobility becomes natural. New forms of mobility will reduce car ownership and instead promote shared mobility, public transport, and excellent cycling and walking connections. Residents of Cartesius will be offered attractive alternatives to cars and other mobility options through a smart mobility offering. Visitors to Cartesius will also find it easy to make sustainable mobility choices. The neighborhood is located next to the Utrecht Zuilen railway station, making travel to and from the area by public transport attractive. Adequate and comfortable bicycle storage facilities, combined with cycle paths, will optimize cycling. A large number of shared cars will be introduced in the first two phases.

Cartesius: A progressive healthy urban neighborhood

In and around Cartesius, people can live harmoniously with each other, the city, and nature. Inspired by the scientific theory of the Blue Zones, Cartesius will be a vibrant, sustainable, and green urban neighborhood. A place to recharge. With the monumental building, known as the CAB, as the second living room and radiant centerpiece of the neighborhood. Cartesius will offer a differentiated and inclusive living environment and a spatial environment centered on meeting and natural movement, with its own identity and high ambitions. At least 30% of the neighborhood will be green for enjoyment and to promote climate adaptation and biodiversity in the area.

In addition to the strong focus on fostering community and social connections, the area development also emphasizes social responsibility. Currently, there is a pressing shortage of housing in the Netherlands. Therefore, the first phase will focus on realizing homes in the social segment, owner-occupied homes, and homes with moderate and free-sector rent. The plan also accommodates a wide variety of special target groups, creating an inclusive society. Additionally, care has been taken to ensure that the urban neighborhood will have a good mix of different types of homes, allowing everyone to find a suitable home at every stage of life and to build a residential career within the neighborhood.

Program and Facilities in Cartesius

The development of Cartesius consists of several phases. Phases 2-6, comprising 2530 homes, are being developed by Ballast Nedam Development and MRP. Together with the first phase of 322 homes by Keystone Vastgoed, a neighborhood with a total of 2852 homes, two parks, a primary school, sports hall, supermarket with organic products, restaurants, and various cultural and sports facilities is being developed. The neighborhood will be car-free, with ample space for pedestrians and cyclists and smart mobility solutions.
