The municipality of Schiedam and Ballast Nedam Development have signed an agreement for the reservation of land at the Peperklip location. Alderman Antoinette Laan (Housing) handed CEO Onno Dwars a symbolic 'Heart of the Neighborhood' on February 1, 2024. The shared ambition is to transform the location of the public primary school De Peperklip into a multifunctional place: with a new primary school, sports hall, childcare, a community center, and a space for welfare organizations (doctor's office, physio) to create a 'Heart of the Neighborhood'. The Peperklip development will bring new energy to the neighborhood and contribute to improving the livability in the East district.

"The Peperklip location should invite social interaction. Ballast Nedam Development will not only build a new, sustainable primary school and homes but also add societal value to the location. This can be achieved by creating a 'Heart of the Neighborhood' with various community functions," said Alderman Antoinette Laan. With a nod to the 'Heart of the Neighborhood', she presented a chocolate heart to Onno Dwars, CEO of Ballast Nedam Development. Onno Dwars, in turn, handed over a sports ball with the logos of the municipality of Schiedam, Ballast Nedam Development, and the project De Peperklip. This ball symbolizes collaboration, a healthy living environment, and of course, the new sports hall that will be realized.

Municipality, Primo Schiedam Foundation, and Ballast Nedam Development

In December 2021, the municipality of Schiedam invited market parties to apply for the development of the Peperklip location in the East district. After a selection procedure, Ballast Nedam Development emerged as the best candidate. On October 20, 2022, the cooperation agreement was signed between the municipality, Primo Schiedam Foundation, and the developer. Over the past year, they have worked together on a feasible plan. Now it is time to enter into an agreement for land reservation and discuss the plans with the community. In the coming period, the municipality and the developer will engage in dialogue with residents and stakeholders about the implementation of the 'Heart of the Neighborhood'.

The 'Heart of the Neighborhood' on the Fahrenheitstraat/Celsiusstraat includes a primary school, sports hall, approximately 220 homes, commercial, and community functions. Construction will take place in phases starting from late 2025, allowing the school to remain in use.
